A journey through the traditions and sacred rituals of a Tamil Hindu wedding.
Pirasanth and Shankavie's wedding will be celebrated according
to Tamil Hindu traditions, through a series of sacred rituals
symbolising love, commitment and the joining of two families.
Each tradition carries its own meaning. For those experiencing
a Tamil Hindu wedding for the first time, this guide explains
the significance behind the moments that will unfold
throughout the ceremony.
The ceremony begins with Pirasanth's arrival, as he is welcomed by Shankavie's family. The traditional Aalathi is performed to bless the groom, ward off negative energies and welcome him as he begins this new chapter.
The ceremony continues with prayers to Lord Ganesh, seeking his blessings and the removal of obstacles from the couple's path. The Pallikai ritual follows, symbolising prosperity, fertility and abundance in their future life together.
Shankavie makes her entrance accompanied by her family and joins Pirasanth at the Manavarai, the sacred wedding stage. Prayers to Shiva and Parvathi, followed by the Navagraha Pooja, seek harmony and blessings for the couple's life together.
The sacred fire, Agni, is lit as a divine witness to Pirasanth and Shankavie's union. Offerings are made into the fire as symbols of purity, devotion and the commitment they make to one another.
Shankavie's parents symbolically entrust their daughter to Pirasanth, giving their blessing to the marriage. More than the union of two people, Kanyadhanam represents the coming together of their two families.
The Koorai, Shankavie's traditional wedding saree, and the Thaali, the sacred necklace representing their marriage, are blessed. Shankavie then changes into her Koorai before returning for the most significant moment of the ceremony.
To the sound of traditional music, Pirasanth ties the sacred Thaali around Shankavie's neck, marking their union as husband and wife. As the Thaali is tied, their families and loved ones shower the couple with flower petals and blessings.
Together, Pirasanth and Shankavie take the seven sacred steps,
representing their promises to support, respect
and walk alongside one another throughout married life.
The Ammi, Metti and Arundhati rituals symbolise strength,
faithfulness and stability in their marriage.
The ceremony concludes with Asirvatham,
as the couple receives the blessings and good wishes
of their families and loved ones.
And so, their journey as
husband and wife begins.
